Riven stood at the edge of the forest, looking out over the massive ruins of Arakai. There still were considerable amounts of buildings intact, mostly the majority of the outer rings that remained unscathed. Regardless, the smoke pillars rising from the center gave her a stir in her gut. Her country had betrayed her and over a million of their citizens. With no remorse.

Rosaline approached Riven, having been on a walk. "Thinking about stuff, little one?"

Riven looked back at Rosaline, then back at the city, ignoring the poor attempt at an insult. "This is insane. They never would've done this. They shouldn't have. How can they authorize a massacre like this."

"They authorized experiments on me, so this comes as no surprise...they are corrupt." She sighed. "They even separated me from my daughter."

"Well that much is obvious now. But still ... " She'd fought so long for them, for the good fight, and all this time she'd been manipulated to serve their will. What things had she done that were wrong, she didn't even dare think about it all. "Yasuo told the people he'd offer them a bright future. Guess he's the same, too."

"We don't know yet. I think he really wants to show these humans what New Pendragon tried to hide." She conjured up an orb of electricity for Riven. "Powers."

"Selfish. People lived happily not knowing. Stop the enslavement and experimenting on specials, ok, but forcing this on others is just selfish, and look what it led to. The people were better off without this whole rebellion."

"One cannot say if that is right or wrong...both sides have their story." She sighed. "They were wrong to experiment on me, yes, going so far as to use me as a battery. They may have seen the experiments as trying to solve their own problems."

Riven kicked a pebble down into a hole. She had never seen anything like this. Thousand years of peace, and now, it had all gone to hell. And for what.

"Relax. Everything will get sorted out in time. They can rebuild their city."

"That's not the thing. You know Yasuo's story? I do. He was kicked out of his village for the murder of an elder. They thought it could only be him, because he was the only one who mastered the wind technique. But it wasn't him. His exiling and him forced to kill his brother was 'cause ... 'cause I killed that elder. He was starting riots against New Pendragon, and ... I was tasked to take him out. I can't face him, knowing that his whole life was ruined, because I followed the order of a corrupt government."

"As did my daughter...she followed their orders too. That does not make her a bad person..." She looked at Riven. "Go talk to Yasuo, and work things out. The longer this remains a misunderstanding, the longer it will take to heal the wounds."

She snapped her head towards Rosaline. "What, are you crazy? 'Hey, yas, yeah, your whole miserable life and all that, kinda my fault, but hey, we all make mistakes, forgive and forget?' He was forced to kill his brother because of me. Lost his wife, his family, his home. Everything."

Rosaline sighed. "Fine, but know that you're choosing to carry a burden that you can choose to offload here and now." She turned, starting to walk away.

"He'll just kill me right where I stand. I'm not suicidal." Riven shook her head. The devastation her actions had caused upon his life was too great to just forgive and forget.

"So you're not willing to take responsibility, and are willing to let the blame fall on someone else's shoulders? You're no different from New Pendragon if you are."

Riven turned around. "Who says I'm framing someone else? You just told me it wasn't my fault, and now suddenly it is? What happened to "you followed orders", huh?" This was the worst time to pick a fight. But she just discovered she'd destroyed lives, she'd been fighting for the wrong side and then this lady comes in and starts guilt tripping her.

"All I am saying is deal with your demons...not bottle them up. Sorry if I interrupted you." She started walking again, not quite the miracle worker Astraria seemed to be.

She was stunned for a couple seconds, then regained her composure and looked back at the city. Maybe she had to come clean. Worst case scenario she had to fight her way out of 1.9 million people who all would hate her for who she was. But why would she put her life on the line for something she was told to do by their common enemy.
