| The convoy came to a halt near the edge of the Salynean Forest. Ordo stopped and looked up at the bulky walkers. Armed to the teeth with heavy weaponry it was hard to believe how fragile they were to Demonic weaponry. Behind him the 2 personnel transports slowly came to a halt as well, with the rest of the troops that were escorting the convoy stopping along with their designated vehicles. He checked his blaster rifle, making sure the safety was on, then moved towards the rest of his mates, grouping up near the fron AT-TE. The personnel transports were carrying groundstaff to a nearby outpost, and with the aerial ambushes lately, sending them over by Gunships was out of the question. So, they were forced to take the longer route through the outlines of the forest by foot.
He heard a couple of the men chattering about setting up camp here, while he turned to a friend of his, Arven J'Qora. "Man, if we set camp here, I swear, I ain't cookin' tonight. Not unless we get closer to them trees. Need that cover."

| Sirius heaved a sigh beneath his helmet. How was he suppose to see where he was going when 95% of his vision was blocked by plastic? In the end it didn't matter. As long as he didn't stand out then he had nothing to worry about. He would be sticking with the patrol for a while longer until they reached their destination. The he would be called away on a "emergency mission" and move independently from there. Thankfully the convoy was moving at a steady pace and they weren't taking any route that was too dangerous. He was finally brought from his thoughts as another soldier voice his opinion on setting up camp for the night.
"Need that cover." Sirius was inclined to agree. It they were stopping by forest, they should at least use the natural barriers given to them. Who knew what the hell lurked around after nightfall. He had heard rumors about what had happened to the eighty-first unit when they had slept in the open. Hopefully, this convoy would make it through with all their limbs intact...
"I agree, God knows why we stopped in the middle of a clearing when there is a forest not even one hundred feet away." Sirius called out to the soldier.

| Ordo nodded. "Well, it's a better spot for the Walkers to make a stand if we do get attacked. Trees block line of fire, while bombers of fighters can use those trees as obstructions for us or even to drop them on us. Open field gives us a better chance, vehicle wise." He planted the rifle in the ground, the hilt upwards and resting both his hands on it. The escort was a detachment of the 212th Legion, one of the lesser active legions in the army. "I'd rather take a clear shot at them than slither through the trees waiting to get shredded." | |

| "Smartest thing I heard all day." Sirius laughed.
It would be funnier if it weren't so true. The commander of the unit had droned on and on about the mission details. Generally he was saying lots of nothing, everything the soldiers needed was on the file they had gotten an hour ago. Why the pompous ass needed to spend another twenty three minutes explaining it was beyond him. At least the man before him has some semblance of tactical knowledge. It wouldn't hurt to know him, or at least know of him.
"The name's Sirius." He quickly introduced. He was never given a code name as his true name should never be well known. Thus there was no danger in giving his true identity. "Nice to meet you..." here he trailed off hoping for the other soldier to finish.

| Ordo gave Sirius a good slap on the shoulder pad.
"Ordo Aven. Can't say I heard of you before, you new blood from the Academy? Or a transfer?"
He usually made a point of knowing the people he travelled with. From the two rather gruesome battles he was in he learned that in every day life those soldiers wouldn't mean jack, but in that one moment, the moment you head into battle, the moment you face your enemy, your doom, when you stare death in the eyes, these men and women were closer than brothers and sisters. They were a part of you. They would give their lives for you, and you would do it in return.

| "A transfer, command is quite fond of moving me around. My job, aside from fighting, is to access the capabilities and structural soundest of each unit, and provide instruction when necessary." Sirius replied with a small wave.
It technically wasn't a lie. Sirius would inform command of dysfunctional units if it affected his mission, but he didn't have to include such a thing in any of the reports he wrote. This unit would deliver him on schedule, so it probably wouldn't be taken note of.
"Basically I am the inspector that gives each unit the pass or fail. Everything in this unit is looking good though. The soldiers listen to orders and the convoy is moving smoothly. Not everything is perfect, but nothing in this world is." Sirius said with a shrug. "We should probably move towards the trees though, cover and all that."

| "So you're the snake that dresses up as a soldier then secretly evaluates us all. Well, glad it's someone decent that does it, not some usurper."
Arven couldn't help but snicker at the remark, looking up to the lead All Terrain - Tactical Enforcer [AT-TE]. As if psychic, commands came through their helmets to move the convoy to the forest border. Transports would remain under tree cover while the AT-TE's would stay right at the edge to maintain a clear firing window. All troops were ordered to set up camp. The sky started to turn a bit red and dark, twilight setting in with night imminent.
"Guess I'll have to make something for y'all then, hey? I'll try'na make something out of the scraps we got left from yesterday."
He took his helmet off and walked passed a turning Walker with the other soldiers moving along as well. He'd already seen some nice herbs nearby, wouldn't hurt to see if they were here somewhere as well.

| "So you're the chef that cooked yesterday's meal? I must say you really outdid yourself. I still can't believe you made the rations tolerable, much less edible." Sirius complimented.
The most of the army rations didn't have a pleasant taste. The worst by far was the ration bar, which had no taste, but had the texture of soggy cardboard. Sirius, like any soldier, was used to this by now and got by just fine. Thus he had been taken aback when he has been served a meal that not only tasted well, but had the texture that didn't get clogged in your throat.
"Need any help? I can't really cook, but I can gather ingredients if you want," He offered. It really didn't matter if they got a good meal or not. Talking with soldiers and making himself seem normal was the most effective way of blending into the background. A wise man once said, the best way to avoid the public eye was to be right at the center of the crowd.

| "Well, I saw some good herbs along the way. Look for a green plant with a yellow starlike flower. I'll probably be making stew, those things do great in it. Kinda taste like meat replacements, but it's better than putting blocks of wood in. Just don't go wander off too deep, we don't want anyone dropping out to get us better chow."
Not only did the starfoil improve taste of rations tenfold, but it also functioned as a great binder, allowing Ordo to make the best of leftover rations or the remains of yesterdays dinner. He sat down against a tree and put the helmet next to him as Arven went to pick up the supplies container with what little equipment they could carry and use. After all, the last thing they wanted was to either get too heavily loaded with luxury materials or to make themselves a huge target with big fires going for warmth. A generator would have to do.

| Memorizing the instructions Sirius wandered off into the woods. He knew of starfoil and located the herb here and there. It was not as plentiful back at his childhood home, where it grew in bucket fulls. His mother had used it when they face tough times or needed to save on money. Unfortunately, Sirius had never learned the proper cooking method, and the first time he had tried to use it in his own dish it has made the dish taste like sawdust... To be fair though it had been an improvement.
He wandered camp making small conversations here and there. No need to talk with only one man after all. After a proper amount of time had passed he returned with the herb.
"Is this what you were asking for?" Sirius asked unsure. No need to sound confident, it didn't help blend in. It was better to act like on of those city boys. Uncertain of the wilderness and completely lost when it came to plants.

| "Ayy, that's the stuff. And a good amount too, should do just fine."
Ordo took over the starfoil from Sirius and got started on the seemingly nuclear waste of a dinner. While he was busy, Arven kicked him into story mode, asking him about the first real battle he'd taken part of.
"Oh you done it now. No escape from this story. Was about a little under two years back now. We lost the Bay of Ghaal to those smokers. Surprise attack during the night, can't see those cruisers for the life of you when it's dark. They held like a good 200 men captive, either as execution fodder or maybe even dinner, god knows what they're capable of. So, there I was, sitting in one of the first Gunships. Turret hit our engine, we went down, but crashed straight into one of their anti air turrets. Took the bugger out rightaway. So we all played dead, I mean, you're in the middle of their ranks. 7 of us lived, we made sure the 3 dead men lay on top of us, poor bastards. So they ignored us, assuming we were goners.
We waited for 30 seconds like that, let them get accustomed to the fact a crashed gunship was in their middle, before we launched two salvo's from the still functional launcher, taking out a group of 'm and another turret, right before we kicked down the sidedoors and blasted anything that moved. Suckers never knew what happened, and they suddenly focused on us. Saw some good men get shredded, the kind of thing you can't unsee, but that distraction opened a window. Gunships shot in, blasting them apart, turrets falling. Only me and my man Hasb made it out of that Gunship alive. But we gave them hell."

| Sirius gave a low whistle. It was impressive for what he had been through. After crashing into an anti-aircraft platform, from who knows how high, into enemy territory; somehow this man made it out alive to tell the tale. Either he was favored by the gods or his tactics were flawless. From the story, it seemed to be more the former than the latter.
"Sounds like quite the story for when you get back home." Sirius remarked. "Being on grading duty myself I have mostly come across battle when we are ambushed. Let me tell you, that is when a soldier comes alive. I have seem teams go from trash to order in a blink of an eye." He snapped to emphasis his point. "Battle wakes something up inside of some of these guys. I don't know if it is for the better or for the worse, but it happens."

| "I've seen men break not during, but after battle. The stress, the fear. Not knowing if a breaking twig is just your friend coming back from taking a leak, or enemy patrols. Even when they retired. It's useful in the war. But the real losses are the men that survive, and suffer afterwards. That's why I sorta hope I won't outlive this. Don't have a deathwish, but don't think I can get a life after this either."
A minute of silence followed his comment, in which Ordo managed to finish the stew. He changed to a better subject, that of Arven's pregnant wife back home in Arakai while handing out plates.
"She's one of a kind, all right. You better keep her close to home before someone takes off with her. Not that they'd wanna cross you."

| The conversation moved on from there. From Arven's wife to what was waiting for when the men got home. Sirius made up some half baked tale of this or that. He had done this too many times, this conversation too many times. His family or some girl that he had met. The story was always different, but the truth never changed. What waited for him? Nothing did, nothing awaited his return. All that Sirius could do was search for what was taken from him. He would find his parents and abandon this hell hole called war. It occurred to Sirius that Ordo said he hoped he didn't survive. Perhaps he too had nothing left, nothing waiting for him. So as the other men talked loudly about which female officer was the best (childish), Sirius asked Ordo the question.
"Isn't there something waiting for you at home? A wife or lover? Perhaps family and friends? Won't they miss you?"

| Ordo looked at him, for the first time a serious look in his eyes. He then shook his head.
"Couldn't do that to anyone. As a soldier you put your life on the line every day. If anyone was waiting for me, they would be waiting for two things. Either me, or the message that they won't have to wait anymore. My old man didn't make it in the first attack of those cowardly bastards, destroyed my mother. Don't want to have that on my conscience. No, I don't have anyone. I live in the here and now, have some fun with the guys and give it my all."

| "I see." Here, Sirius would usually say that he wished them luck in whatever endeavor they had ahead of them. However this time was different. This man had cut all ties and fully intended to die. Wishing him luck would be the same thing as condemning him to die. Perhaps he wanted it that way, but it was still taboo to wish dead on another person. Especially for someone who was as kind-hearted as Ordo. Thus Sirius took careful thought of his words.
"I suppose that wishing you luck isn't the appropriate thing to say. I guess I will just have to say that I respect the path you have chosen. However don't forget to slow down every once in a while to enjoy the scenery. You only have one life, enjoy it while you can." With that Sirius got up and left. He was tired and had more to prepare for the trip tomorrow. It was nice talking to Ordo, perhaps he could do it again some time.

| Ordo smiled, then put the helmet on his lap. The same one he left the Academy with. One life, ey? Let's hope it worth all of those of the future. He closed his eyes and instantly saw the horrors of that night several weeks ago again. Startled and clearly awake now, he sat up a bit more straight and started to inspect his rifle, trying to get his mind off of it. | |
